On February 27th the wind and cold, mixed with a little sunshine didn’t keep equestrians from competing in the first of four Trail Ride Challenges to be hosted by the Diamond L Arena of Sandy Valley and the Rocking MB Ranch of Ely, Nevada. The riders competed on a man made course, at the Diamond L Arena, complete with jumps, water pond, shrubbery, mail box, flags, and more. Judges for the day were Carol and Virgil Fergen and Dub Timberlake. Riders also rode the course for time only and then went to the arena to barrel race for more points. The judges spent the day watching riders from Ely, Alamo, Lund, Phoenix, Boulder City, Las Vegas, and Sandy Valley.
Riders from ages 7 – 70 and all equine skills competed for day prizes and the chance to be named the Ultimate Horseman for a trophy saddle, The All Around Horseman to win a trophy buckle in three age categories, and the Champion Horseman for a portable lounger and halter in the three age categories. The saddle, buckle, and other year end prizes will be awarded to the best rider, in their category, at the end of the four challenges.
Day High Point Winners in each category received a custom plaque and the Day High Point Winner, combining all categories, received a custom embroidered jacket. Day Winners were:
Champion Horseman 17 & Under = Savannah Drew
Champion Horseman 18-44 = Dawn Brown
Champion Horseman 45 & Over = Neil Biggs
All Around Champion Horseman 17 & Under = Savannah Drew
All Around Champion Horseman 18-44 = Bill Olliges
All Around Champion Horseman 45 & Over = Joe Dan Martinez
Ultimate Open Horseman All Ages = Cristian Auer
Other riders may qualify for the additional year end prizes awarded to Rookie of the Year, Youngest Rider, Oldest Rider and the Riders’ Choice which is an award given the competitor the other riders feel deserves to be recognized.
The events are designed to bring awareness to equine competition, family fun, and the local 4-H program. Our very own Sandy Valley 4-H club and their leaders did our community proud with polite workers, great food at the concession stand, a well run lead line course for the little ones, and competitors who are in the run for the prizes. 4- H raised hundreds of dollars to support their group.
